Fire up your imagination for a fun and fabulous story hour with Miss Akasha L Van-Cartier and her friend Indi Skies! There are plenty of fun picture books to read at City of Asylum Bookstore, and these glamorous queens will share a few of their favorites that focus on themes of kindness, confidence, and embracing self expression.
A local legend in the Drag Scene, Akasha has been performing for 25 years. In an interview for Rivers of Steel, she said that Drag Queen Story hour is “a program where we are drag queens for education,” an engaging program complete with games, songs and puzzles that make learning fun and entertaining for the kids and the adults in attendance. When asked why Drag Story Hour programs are so important, Akasha poignantly stated “We need to learn about each other’s diversities and differences, struggles and pains… because that’s the only way, at any point in time, that we’re all going to be on an equal level of taking care of each other.”
Story selections will be geared towards kids six and under, but children and families of all ages are welcome to join the fun. And drag queens aren’t the only ones who get to play dress up! Attendees are encouraged to wear the clothes that make them feel like royalty too.
Stick around after the program for a tour of our House Publications on Sampsonia Way! The tour groups will leave at 1pm for a 20-minute tour, giving attendees enough time to get settled when they return for the next program in our LitFest lineup.
