Censored Cartooning: In-Conversation with Rob Rogers, Pedro Molina, & Khalid Albaih

This conversation between Pittsburgh political cartoonist Rob Rogers, Nicaraguan cartoonist and illustrator Pedro Molina, and Sudanese artist Khalid Albaih will explore political cartooning and the challenge of cartoonists facing censorship. The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.

About the Artists:

Rob Rogers (he/him) is an award-winning freelance editorial cartoonist living in Pittsburgh. His cartoons have been vexing and entertaining readers since 1984 when he joined the Pittsburgh Press as an intern. In 1993, he was hired by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Newsweek, and The Week, among many others. Rob has also been the curator of several national cartoon exhibitions, including Too Hot to Handle: Creating Controversy through Political Cartoons (2003) and Drawn To The Summit: A G-20 Exhibition Of Political Cartoons (2009), both at The Andy Warhol Museum, and Bush Leaguers: Cartoonists Take on the White House (2007) at the American University Museum. Rob is an active member (and past president) of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC). His work received the 2000 and 2013 Thomas Nast Award from the Overseas Press Club, the 1995 and 2019 National Headliner Award from the Press Club of Atlantic City, the 2015 Berryman Award from the National Press Foundation, and many Golden Quills from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania. In 2020, Rob Rogers won the AAEC’s Rex Babin Memorial Award for Excellence in Local Cartooning. He was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in both 1999 and 2019.

Pedro Molina (he/him) better known as PxMolina, is a Nicaraguan cartoonist and journalist whose work has been published by national and international outlets and magazines for over two decades. His work focuses on political and social issues, denouncing human rights abuses and advocating for individual and collective rights. He is currently living in exile in the US, after the Ortega regime’s crackdown on dissent intensified in 2018. Pedro’s work has received numerous awards, including the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent 2023, the Maria Moors Cabot 2019 Prize from Columbia University (USA), the 2021 Gabo Award for Excellence in journalism from GABO Foundation and the Excellence in Journalism/Cartooning Award 2018 granted by the Inter-American Press Association.

Khalid Albaih, a Romanian-born artist raised in Qatar, is a Sudanese award-winning artist based in Oslo. He has founded influential platforms including getfadaa.com, Sudan Artist Fund, and Sudan Art and Design Library. His artwork has been commissioned by prestigious organizations like Amnesty International and displayed at Documenta. Albaih’s insightful commentary has been featured in renowned publications such as CNN, The Guardian, and Aljazeera. He authored “Khartoon!” and edited “Sudan Retold,” a collection of works by 31 artists exploring Sudan’s history. Khalid continues to have a profound impact, connecting the global art scene with the fight for human rights.
