Reel Q: Out of Uganda

What does it mean to fight for survival in the place you call home, just for being yourself?

Presented in partnership with one of the oldest LGBTQ+ film festivals in the world, Reel Stories is a free monthly film series dedicated to showcasing international queer cinema. Starting in 1985, Reel Q’s mission is to increase the availability and accessibility of queer film in Pittsburgh and its surrounding region, highlighting the diverse experiences of our worldwide community. Continuing in that mission, our February Reel Q screening presents Out of Uganda. 

Directed by Rolanda Colla and Josef Burri, this documentary centers on four protagonists. Philip, Lynn, Hussein and Shammy, young LGBT Ugandans, are fighting for survival. Staying in their country, where religious oppressions and discriminations prevail, endangers their lives. Their latest hope is to leave it all behind and experience a long and painful exile. 

From the Director’s Statement: “Above and beyond the personal destinies of the four protagonists, the film shows the fanatical blindness with which homophobic attitudes are expressed and disseminated. It shows the work of activists who never give up despite having to fight against great resistance. The best successes are achieved where dialogue is sought rather than confrontation.”
