Thursday Night Jazz: SLP Honors Emily Remler

All female jazz trio performs their final of three concerts at City of Asylum! 

It all started at a jam session. The musicians of SLP—Mila Shadel, Ava Lintz, and Soojin Park—met, jammed, and clicked. In the past year they decided to join forces to create SLP, bringing new spins to old tunes, creating experimental music, and regaling Pittsburgh with simply great jazz. This March, they will be highlighting compositions from jazz guitarist Emily Remler’s discography (including Firefly, Take Two, Transitions, Catwalk, East to Wes, and This Is Me), in addition to performing some of her arrangements of jazz standards. The chosen pieces are meant to highlight Remler’s unique voice and honor her legacy as a jazz guitar giant in her own right.

About the Artists:

Mila Shadel (electric guitar) is a freelance musician and enjoys playing a variety of different styles of music around the Pittsburgh area. She grew up in McMurray, PA and studied guitar with Anthony Janflone Sr. while she was in high school. She then went on to complete her undergraduate degree in Guitar Performance at Duquesne University. There she had the opportunity to study with Eric Suseoff, Mark Koch, Thomas Kikta, Jeff Bush, and Mike Tomaro. She currently teaches at Sunburst School of Music in Squirrel Hill. She loves to share her passion for music through her guitar instruction and her performances.

Ava Lintz (upright bass) grew up in Morgantown, WV in a family of musicians. She currently enjoys a diverse career in Pittsburgh where she has spent the last several years working with the city’s finest. She studied bass with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony and served as assistant principal bass in the Akron Symphony. She currently plays bass in the Precipice Community Band whose debut album [cubes/cubed] was released this past fall. 

Soojin Park (drums) is a drummer based in the Pittsburgh area, originally from South Korea. She moved to Boston in 2016 and studied at Berklee College of Music to widen her musical aspect. After completing her undergraduate degree in 2019, she began her master’s degree in Percussion Performance-Jazz Emphasis at Duquesne University and graduated last May. She studied with Bob Gullotti, Thomas Wendt, Jeff Bush, and Mike Tomaro while studying in both schools. She currently plays drums with her friends and colleagues and is expanding her career.
