COVID-19 Safety Guidelines for City of Asylum @ Alphabet City

An exterior view of Alphabet City on North Avenue Tuesday Dec. 18, 2018, on the North Side..(Nate Guidry/Post-Gazette)

In person programs are returning to Alphabet City, and we can’t wait to welcome you back. We want to make it as safe as we can for our audience, staff, volunteers, and artists. Please read our Safety Guidelines and additional venue information below.

Covid-19 policies for indoor programs [at Alphabet City] as of September 1, 2021

To keep our audience safe, we will require proof of vaccination (physical card or photo) to attend all events at Alphabet City.

There will be special accommodations for children under 12 and people with medical conditions or religious beliefs preventing them from being vaccinated. These audience members will be asked to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of the performance start time, or a negative COVID-19 antigen test taken within 6 hours of the performance start time.  All guests will be required to wear masks.

Additionally:

  • All artists, volunteers, and staff are fully vaccinated and will be wearing masks (except when on stage)
  • Audience size will be limited to 60% total capacity and seats will be set up with moderate social distancing.
  • If you do not have a mask, one will be provided for you.
  • The HVAC system at Alphabet City has been upgraded with the addition of MERV-13 filters and an ionization bar.
  • Hand sanitizer dispensers are located throughout the facility.
  • Please remember there is a restaurant, 40 North, inside our open concept venue. Diners will be required to show proof of vaccination but will not wear masks while seated at tables.

Registration is required. At this time, to ensure we maintain capacity and keep our audiences, staff, and artists safe, we are unable to accommodate walk ups without reservations.

What if I’m wary to come in person? What if I don’t live in Pittsburgh?

No problem! All programs will be live-streamed through our virtual programming channel City of Asylum @ Home

Learn more and register to attend in-person or to watch online!

The guidelines above are for events taking place indoors at our Alphabet City venue. Learn more about safety guidelines for tent programs as part of Summer on Sampsonia

Masonic rendering

City of Asylum @ Alphabet City is a permanent home for City of Asylum programming and the arts. In addition, City of Asylum @ Alphabet City includes our offices and the City of Asylum Bookstore featuring works in translation.

City of Asylum @ Alphabet City is a hub for Pittsburgh’s readers and writers, jazz and small-scale music and performance, and artistic experimentation. It is a home for diverse voices from around the globe—a place where Pittsburgh meets the world and the world meets Pittsburgh. And it is also a home for many partnering artists and organizations in our own community.

By establishing a safe haven for writers and artists who voice ideas that are new, different, or provocative in a diverse urban community, we encourage new lines of communication, cultural exchange, and collaboration. Sharing one another’s narratives can transform the lives of both residents and artists and combat intolerance and exclusion.

The issue of artistic freedom is crucial to any nation. It is not ‘just’ about the artists’ rights to express themselves freely, it is also a question of the rights of citizens to access artistic expressions and take part in cultural life — and thus one of the key issues for democracy.

— Ole Reitov, Executive Director Freemuse
