World of Music: Kinetic (Senegalese Drumming)

Music can often be viewed as a force of motion, full of rhythms and energy that are, simply put, kinetic. Fully embracing the power, energy, and tradition of music that draws from global sources comes a World of Music concert from Joseph Sheehan’s band Kinetic. No strangers to the Alphabet City stage, this bright group was formed to fuse connections and draw inspiration from Western Art Music, jazz, and traditional Ghanaian music.

They return to City of Asylum this August with two special guests, Cheikh and Papa, masters of Senegalese drumming. The pair joins Kinetic in a lively concert featuring new material that melds traditional Senegalese drumming with the sounds of the modern American and Pittsburgh-specific music scenes.

About the Band:

Utilizing a unique blend of global folk traditions and contemporary jazz, Kinetic’s performance efforts celebrate multiculturalism, wisdom, and unity. The diverse and adaptable music collective was first imagined when its founder, composer and pianist Joseph Sheehan, created music that reflected his experiences studying traditional music in Ghana, classical composition, and jazz.
