POSTPONED: Global Choral Traditions Presented by the Mendelssohn Choir

April 26, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

This session of Global Choral Traditions is postponed. New date to be announced soon.

The Mendelssohn Choir invites you to City of Asylum @ Alphabet City to explore the rich traditions of global choral music with local artists. Participants will learn about specific cultural song traditions, and have the opportunity to sing songs from within those traditions. It’s an interactive concert like no other! And no singing experience required.

The April concert features special guest, Penny Anderson, leader of Pittsburgh’s monthly shape-note sing.

Shape-note singing is a musical practice and tradition of social singing from music books printed in shape notes, a variant system to Western musical notation. April’s concert is an exploration of and participation with shape note singing.

About Penny Anderson:
Penny Anderson is a life-long singer of choral music and traditional folksong. Classically trained in music theory, voice, and piano, she has a repertoire of several hundred traditional folk songs from the American, British Isles, and French traditions, and has written dozens of original songs and choral pieces.
