Eco-Justice for All! Dreaming Interruptions: Workshop with Joy Katz

This is an in-person only workshop at the Alphabet Reading Garden located at 1406 Monterey Street. The garden is an accessible venue.

In this Eco-Justice for All! workshop, Joy Katz, poet and social practice artist, offers writing prompts to guide participants in dreaming up an interruption. What’s an interruption? A modest, playful way to draw attention to an injustice that you are already thinking about. Opportunities for interruption are close by in our environment—in a neighborhood, at a workplace, or in your home. After group discussion, writing, and conversation with Joy, participants will compose instructions for their own micro-activist interruption. We invite participants to turn their instructions into a poem and carry out their plan, document it, and share it by emailing poetlaureate@cityofasylum.org.

*Please note special venue*: the workshop with Joy Katz will be held in-person at the Alphabet Reading Garden at 1406 Monterey Street. Chairs, water, and writing instruments will be provided. Portalet is accessible at 318 Sampsonia Way. In the case of inclement weather, this workshop will be held on Zoom.

About Eco-Justice for All! Poetry Confronts Climate Catastrophe

About the facilitator:

Joy Katz writes about whiteness, tennis, adoption, and other things. She also collaborates in the Pittsburgh-based activist art collective IfYouReallyLoveMe. Her most recent social practice collaboration, OverHere/OverHear, was live music for hourly labor. Her most recent poetry collection is All You Do Is Perceive. A past NEA, Stegner fellow, and honoree at the international art conference Social Engagement, she teaches off the tenure track in MFA programs around the country and in Carlow University’s long-running Madwomen in the Attic workshops for women.
