An ER doctor covers a deadly American epidemic: violence in our neighborhoods

In this program we welcome Dr. Rob Gore to discuss the American epidemic of community violence. Dr. Gore’s memoir, Treating Violence, delves into his upbringing amidst such violence, shares his experience as an emergency room physician, and offers antidotes and a path forward. Lee Schmidt, Director of Public Safety for the City of Pittsburgh and Shayla Holmes, Program Manager at CURE Violence East, will be joining Dr. Gore to add local perspectives to the conversation. This conversation is moderated by Theresa Brown, RN and is presented with support from the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Bioethics.

About the Author:

Rob Gore, MD, is an emergency room physician and community activist. For close to 20 years, he has been exploring and developing programs and solutions that focus on community violence and other disparities affecting urban and global health. He has been named a “CNN Hero” and has been included on the ROOT 100 list. He has been featured on CNN, NBC, ABC, BET, and in the New York Times, among others. He has lectured around the U.S, the Caribbean, South America, and Asia, and has worked in East Africa, Haiti, and South America. He currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his family. About the Moderator:

Theresa Brown, PhD, RN, wrote the New York Times bestseller The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients’ Lives. Her most recent book is Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient. Brown’s first book, Critical Care: A New Nurse Faces Death, Life, and Everything in Between, chronicles Theresa’s first year of nursing. The Shift and Critical Care are used as textbooks at Schools of Nursing around the country. She has been a frequent contributor to the New York Times, writing about nursing and health care. Theresa’s work has also appeared on CNN.com, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Medscape, Slate.com, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She has been interviewed on the NPR programs “Here & Now,” “Fresh Air” and Talk of the Nation, and has appeared on “Hardball” and “20/20.” She speaks internationally on topics relating to nursing, health care and end of life. A native of Missouri, Theresa has a PhD in English from the University of Chicago and taught English for three years at Tufts University. She stayed home with her three children after working at Tufts and was inspired by them to return to school and become a nurse.
