About the Author:
Cristina Modreanu is a theatre critic, curator and researcher at the University of the Arts in Târgu-Mureș, Romania. Holding a PhD in theatre studies from National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest, she is a Fulbright Alumna and the author of six books on Romanian theatre, including A History of Romanian Theatre from Communism to Capitalism (Routledge, 2020).
About the Moderator:
Dr. Zsuzsánna Magdó is the Interim Director at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies where she manages regional studies programs to support interdisciplinary scholarship and public education on the center’s world regions. A native of Transylvania, she received her Ph.D. in History from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Magdó has published articles in journals, edited collections, and other scholarly outlets, most recently “Title VI Today and the Future(s) of SEEES,” ASEEES NewsNet, March 2026 and previously “Ferenc Balázs, Transylvanism, and Global Utopia, 1923-1937” in Europe Now, Issue 33: A Special Feature on European Art, Politics, and Culture ed. by Randall Halle (April 2020) as well as “Romanian Spirituality in Ceaușescu’s Golden Epoch: Social Scientists Reconsider Atheism, Religion, and Ritual Culture,” in Paul Betts and Stephen A. Smith, eds., Science, Religion, and Communism in Cold War Europe (London: Palgrave, April 2016). Dr. Magdó serves on the Executive Board of the Council for National Resource Centers in International and Area Studies and is on the Board of Trustees of the American Institute for Southeast European Studies.
