For more than two decades, Yamaha pianist Orrin Evans has made an art form of the unexpected. This March, Orrin delivers “50 Shades of O” to Alphabet City audiences as part of his 2025 tour and birthday celebration. With more than 25 albums to his credit—including “You Think This America,” listed as one of The New York Times Best Jazz Albums of 2024—without ever relying on the support of a major label, Orrin has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who’s made a habit of rattling the jazz world’s confining cages. This birthday performance showcases Orrin’s trademark raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance, seducing audiences with his wholly original sound.
About the Artist:
Orrin Evans has been playing the piano for over two decades. In that time, he’s earned such accolades as landing in the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll and two Grammy nominations. Orrin is a daring pianist and an adventurous composer, traversing stylistic boundaries with abandon, drawing on full-throttle swing, deep-rooted blues, expressive soul, and bracing excursions into the avant-garde. As an audacious bandleader, he delights in daring fellow musicians to take bold risks, whether in mutable small group settings or his raucous Captain Black Big Band. As an inventive collaborator, his projects range from the nerve-rattling collective trio Tarbaby, to the guitar/piano duo project Eubanks-Evans-Experience, and Brazilian project Terreno Comum.
