City of Asylum Pittsburgh asks all its friends and supporters, whether in Pittsburgh or elsewhere, to stop and pause for a moment and remember the wonderful life of Thaddeus Mosley. Mr. Mosley was a beloved Northside neighbor, a long-time supporter and attendee at our programs, a renowned sculptor whose work graces museums and galleries across the country, but most of all a dear friend to City of Asylum. His strong, elegant, jazz-like carvings and sculptures took basic raw wood and transformed it into a thing of beauty. We are forever grateful to him for creating the carvings that grace the outside of “Winged House,” one of our homes for exiled writers on Sampsonia Way. In the words of our founders, Henry Reese and Diane Samuels, “City of Asylum is grateful for Thad’s friendship and creative generosity. In his person and through his art, his spirit had an immediacy and unforgettable crackle. He embodied all the values we aspire to and many, many times put them into action on our behalf.”
Thad Mosley will be sorely missed, and all of us at City of Asylum Pittsburgh mourn his passing.
